Researchers and scientists have recently completely reversed alopecia and hair loss in 3 people giving them a drug, which is normally used to treat patients with bone marrow disorders.

The patients were suffering from alopecia areata a condition that causes complete hair loss and is notoriously difficult to treat. After just a few months of taking the medication Ruxolitnib all 3 patients had total hair regrowth. The research was undertaken at Columbia University Medical Centre and was published in the journal Nature Medicine.

Alopecia areata affects 2 in every 1000 people in the United Kingdom and it is thought to be caused by the immune system attacking the hair follicles. Scientists in America found a number of immune cells involved in the break down of hair follicles and conducted a number of successful trails in rats and mice.

It has been reported by BBC news that a few patients with severe alopecia areata were given a twice-daily dose of Ruxolitnib; this medication is approved for use in the treatment of bone marrow disorders, in the USA and Europe. Three patients had lost most of their hair but after taking the drug they saw dramatic hair growth within six months of trials.

Lead scientist Dr Raphael Clynes said, we have only recently begun testing Ruxolitnib in patients and if it continues to be a success it will have a huge impact on sufferers of this distressing condition.

Professor David Bickers a leading dermatologist at Columbia University who has treated many individuals with this disorder said there are few tools in the treatment of alopecia areata and this is a major step forward.

Scientists have said more work needs to be done and also more tests to establish whether this drug can be given to a wider audience.
