There’s nothing we love more than getting our hands on a number of statistics to get us excited and we can assure you that there are plenty around the area of hair loss and baldness.
The human condition leads a lot of us to believe that certain things aren’t commonplace or that they only happen to us. So, we’ve compiled a number of different statistics in this blog to show you some of the reality around hair loss. Take a look:
Hair Loss Facts
Did you know that around 40% of men have some sort of visible hair loss by the time they are 35 years of age and 70% have hair loss by the time they reach 60. Hair loss also impacts women and around half of all ladies will suffer from hair loss at one time or another in their lives.
British men are the most likely in Europe to worry about losing their hair and even though this is the case, they are also the least likely to do anything about their hair loss.
So, what determines hair loss? Well, generally hair loss is considered to be in the range of 100 hairs a day. The average head of hair is comprised of around 100,000 follicles.
Three quarters of British people believe that hair loss cannot be prevented and once it begins there is nothing that can be done about it. While almost 9/10 don’t realise that there are a number of different medical treatments approved to deal with hair loss.
Alopecia areata is not as common as people think and tends to impact on around 1% of people that lose hair. Genetic causes are the cause of around 20% of hair loss.
It seems that a lot of us are desperate for hair growth though. Of those who lost their hair, 30% claim they would give up sex to get their hair back. While 60% of those that have suffered hair loss would prefer to have fewer friends and money if they could have their hair back.
People are getting better at seeking help and increasing numbers of men and women throughout the world are looking for help with their hair loss. Between 2004 and 2008 the number of people looking for help with hair loss increased from 361,077 to 811,363 – more than 50%.
Men are still more likely than women to find a remedy for their hair loss and though 20% of men will look for a cure, only 12% of women do the same. This said, more women are likely than men to see a doctor about thinning hair.
Hair loss is a pretty troublesome issue and something that keeps a lot of people awake at night and causes them to worry a lot.
