Basil can reduce hair loss

Basil can reduce hair loss

Well, I knew my mum was right – I should have eaten my greens when I was younger. At least I may have a full head of hair as I hit middle age. The fact is, as we settle into the 21st century, recent research by Swiss research group Mibelle have found that common garden herb Basil has unique properties which could increase hair growth by up to 25%.

Extracts from Basil

It has been known for some time that Basil has some highly positive properties. It contains high concentrations of essential oils and anti-oxidants which have been use in the war against aging and cancer.

In an interview with cosmetics-europe.com, the head of the research team Dr Daniel Schmid explained how the company’s new product on the market was based on extract from Basil, and how it benefits hair growth. He commented on how RootBio Tec HO stimulates hair papilla cells and therefore generates growth.

Dermal Papilla cells

Here on Skalp® we have often discussed the part that hair follicles play in hair growth but we have rarely taken it to the next level to explain the part that papilla cells play. The US national Library of medicine describes their function thus:

Hair dermal papilla cells are specialized mesenchymal cells that exist in the dermal papilla located at the bottom of hair follicles. These cells play pivotal roles in hair formation, growth, and cycling. Hair follicle formation is usually directed by an aggregation of dermal mesenchymal cells, the origin of dermal papilla cells, in the embryonic skin.

Clearly the papilla is intrinsic to the workings of a hair follicle. According to Dr Schmid, RootBio Tec HO plays an active part in inhibiting the activity of an enzyme that promotes the conversion of testosterone to DHT.

The effects of testosterone and DHT

This is partly the reason why men suffer from balding more profoundly than women – the production of the hormone testosterone. A derivative of testosterone is Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is formed in the hair follicles. The presence of DHT shrinks the hair follicles which results in thinner finer hair. Eventually hair growth stops altogether. However it has been known for some time that the follicles are not dead and can be stimulated to grow hair again.

Dr Schmid believes that RootBio Tec HO stimulates dermal papilla cells and helps to restart and renew hair growth. The test results look very promising. In their clinical study they found that the product had the capacity to reduce hair loss by 26% in the first month and 31% following the second month.
