How to Switch from a Wig to Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)
For many years, men with hair loss had only one option: a wig or hairpiece. However, scalp micropigmentation (SMP) now offers a modern alternative. As a result, more men are choosing to switch from wigs to a permanent hair tattoo.
At first, moving from a wig to SMP can feel overwhelming. However, the process is simpler than most people expect. Because we receive this question often, we’ve created this short guide to help you make a smooth transition.
Gradual change
First of all, SMP is completed over three sessions rather than in one day. Because of this, the change happens step by step.
As the sessions progress, your hair can appear to grow back gradually after you shave it. Therefore, the transition looks natural. In most cases, people will simply assume you prefer a buzz cut instead of growing your hair longer.
Plan ahead
Even so, switching from a hairpiece to a shaved look can feel like a big change. For that reason, it helps to plan ahead.
For example, you might take some time off between your first two sessions. This allows you to adjust at your own pace. In turn, you can feel more confident and less anxious about your new appearance.
Give your scalp time to breathe
In addition, your scalp may be used to glue or tape from your hairpiece. Before starting SMP, it’s important to let your skin recover.
Ideally, spend a few days at home without your wig before treatment. This helps your scalp rest and return to a healthy condition. Alternatively, you can switch from glue to tape. That way, you can remove the hairpiece more easily and give your skin regular breaks.
Help the skin recover
After years of wearing a hairpiece, there can be a build-up of skin on the scalp. A good idea is to use a gentle skin exfoliator (a face wash would work fine!) to get rid of dead skin cells and bring fresh skin to the surface. Getting some sun or UV light will also help the skin return back to its normal condition. Being under the hairpiece for a long time usually means the skin is a little paler and UV light will restore it to its normal tone. Not to mention the vitamin C from the sun will give it a well-needed vitality boost.
Visualise your new look
When you visit one of our scalp micropigmentation clinics, we can arrange for you to have a free virtual mock-up of what your new hairline will look like. Thousands of customers have found this to be an invaluable part of the process. A hairline mock-up gives our clients a clear insight into what’s to come. Visualizing your new look helps you prepare and become truly committed to the change.
